The Republic of Colombia is a country located in the northwest corner of South America. Bordered by Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, and Ecuador, Colombia is the 26th largest nation in the world by area. It is also the 4th most populous Spanish-speaking country (after Mexico, Argentina, and Spain). Despite its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Colombia has a reputation for being unsafe due to its high levels of crime and violence. This reputation is undeserved, however, as the majority of the country is perfectly safe for travelers. In fact, the U.S. Department of State has lifted all travel restrictions to Colombia as of 2018.<\/p>\n

Is it OK to travel to Colombia right now? <\/h2>\n

The Department of State has issued a Travel Advisory for Americans traveling abroad due to the increased risk of crime and terrorism. Americans are advised to exercise increased caution when traveling to certain areas, and to read the entire Travel Advisory before making any travel plans.<\/p>\n

Starting May 1, 2022, visitors to Colombia ages 18 or older must provide proof of complete vaccination for entry or a negative COVID test (48 hours in advance of travel for an antigen test or 72 hours in advance of travel for a PCR test). This is to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n

The face masks are no longer mandatory in the open spaces for the people who are above the age of 18 years and have received the both the doses of the vaccine as per the new guidelines that have been released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This step has been taken in order to ensure the safety of the people and to stop the further spread of the virus. The people are advised to follow the other safety measures like social distancing, washing hands and using sanitizers.<\/p>\n

According to the Colombian government, all US citizens who do not also hold Colombian citizenship must present a valid US passport to enter and leave Colombia. US citizens do not need a Colombian visa for a tourist or business stay of 90 days or less, or for cumulative stays of 180 days or less per calendar year.<\/p>\n

What are the new travel restrictions into the US? <\/h2>\n

The White House has announced that beginning November 8, 2021, all international travelers seeking entry into the United States will be required to present proof of vaccination against COVID-19. The acceptable vaccines include those that have been approved or authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as those that are listed on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Emergency Use Listing. This new requirement is intended to help protect public health and safety and slow the spread of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

As of May 1st, all international travelers entering Colombia must present proof of completion of a COVID-19 vaccination scheme or a negative antigen test taken within 48 hours prior to the originally scheduled time of embarkment. Travelers who are unable to present proof of vaccination or a negative antigen test will be required to take a PCR test within 72 hours prior to their originally scheduled time of embarkment.<\/p>\n

If you are travelling to Colombia, we advise you to exercise a high degree of caution due to the high levels of crime and terrorism in the country. Take extra care to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Try to travel in groups and avoid travelling to remote or dangerous areas. Be sure to keep your belongings safe and keep a close eye on your belongings when out and about. If you are the victim of a crime, report it to the police immediately and get help from your embassy or consulate if needed.<\/p>\n

You will need to present a passport valid for at least six months on entry, with one blank visa page. You will also need to show proof of onward\/return flights. A visa is not required for this destination for a stay of up to 90 days. Please keep in mind that while a visa is not required, you must still meet all other requirements for entry into Colombia.<\/p>\n

Should I carry my passport with me in Colombia <\/h3>\n

It’s always a good idea to have a copy of your passport handy in case you lose the original. You can keep a copy in your wallet or another safe place. But it’s not a good idea to carry your passport with you all the time. Leave it in a safe place, like a hotel safe, when you’re not using it.<\/p>\n
